[Encouragement Talk] Heterogeneous media integrated communications system for future wireless access networks

Abstract(in English) A lot of wireless communications media such as LTE, IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs), millimeter-wave communications, and visible light communications (VLC), are designed and many works have tackled to improve the performance of each medium. However, using a single medium for a communications system limits the performance upper bound. Moreover, the more widely used media still suffer from a lack of bandwidth, while bandwidth for other media is abundant. This paper proposes a heterogeneous media integrated (HetMEDIA) communication system, where multiple media are used for leveraging the abundant bandwidth and increasing the total communication performance. HetMEDIA system focuses on leveraging the difference of the PHY and MAC characteristics of media. In this paper, the HetMEDIA system concept is summarized, related works from the point of view of this concept are introduced, and the possibility of using several types of media is discussed.
