Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Past research showed an effect of priming both with voice (active and passive) and word order (canonical and scrambled) in free word order languages such as Japanese (e.g., Tanaka, 2007). Some studies also reported that the effect of voice priming was enhanced when the verb was repeated between prime and target (e.g., Jin et al., 2014 in Japanese). This stronger priming effect due to the overlap of the lexical head is often referred to as a lexical boost effect and has been explained by an activation-based account of syntactic priming (Pickering & Branigan, 1998). However, less is known whether the verb repetition would also cause a stronger effect of priming in canonical and scrambled word order pairs. Using a picture description task, the current study examined an effect of verb repetition in active sentences (canonical and scrambled word order) in Japanese. In Experiment 1, different verbs were used between primes and target pairs. In Experiment 2, the verb was repeated between prime and target pairs. The results from the two experiments showed that although word order priming effects were observed both in Experiment 1 and 2, there was no influence of verb repetition on the size of word order priming. Our study thus suggests that verb information is used differently in voice (function assignment) and word order (linear order) priming. |
