Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Ishikawa et al. (2014) showed that Japanese short passives primed the passive structure to the same extent as full passive primes with both adults and children. It also showed that the size of a priming effect was larger for adults than children. One possibility for these findings is that the phenomenon of the syntactic priming of Japanese passives is entirely driven by the passive morpheme -(r)are. The other possibility is that not only the passive morpheme -(r)are but also the presence of the nominative argument contributes to the priming of Japanese passive structure. To test these possibilities, we conducted an experiment with the null subject passive primes (e.g., Saru-ni tatak-are-te-ru ‘(The animal) is being hit by the frog’) along with the full passive primes compared with the active primes. Our results showed that both adults and children produced more passive descriptions following both types of passive primes than following the active primes. Interestingly, adults showed a greater number of full passive descriptions following the null subject passive primes than following the full passive primes. In contrast, a numerically smaller number of full passives were produced following the null subject passive primes than the full passive primes in children. Our results demonstrated that the priming of Japanese passives is not entirely driven by the processing of the passive morpheme -(r)are and that the priming effects of Japanese passive is inversely correlated with the frequency of the structure.
