Abstract(in English) R&D of space-division multiplexing (SDM) in optical communications have been activating since the capacity crunch in conventional fiber communication system was pointed out. It will be a quite big project to renovate fiber communication infrastructure including deployed fibers and communication apparatus, hence it will take 15 years or more. Currently, trend in state-of-the-art R&D activities is moving from exploring of enabling technologies toward empirical research regarding practical realization. In this paper, recent progress of SDM and several problems, issues, and future perspective are reviewed.
