Japanese Learners' Interpretation of PRO in English Control Structures

Abstract(in English) This study investigates whether Japanese speakers of English (JSE) can identify the antecedent of PRO in control structures in English. Results of our paper-and-pencil questionnaire experiment on 62 JSEs (3 groups) reveal that correct response rates differed significantly by learner group, not by subject/object control type, and poor performance emerged when verb information was yet to be learned. We conclude that L1 knowledge can facilitate JSEs’ early acquisition of the PRO subject unless there is a mapping mismatch between L1 and L2 with respect to the syntactic-semantic structure of the matrix verb.
