Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Children with autism and communication disabilities usually need communication training using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). As an AAC device more attractive to them, we developed an augmented reality-based voice-output communication aid, VCAN/AR. In the system, user and symbol markers arranged on a desk are photographed by a video camera, and their video image is displayed on the screen located in front of them in real time. If a marker is hidden by user's hand, a 3D presentation of its symbol is overlaid on the marker on the screen. In order to investigate children’s interest in symbol presentations, we develop four different symbol overlay presentations such as 2D static and animated symbols, 3D static and animated symbols using the same symbol. Experiments using five children with autism suggest that they tend to be more interested in the animated symbols than the static ones regardless of their developmental age, and the difference in interest between 2D and 3D depends upon individual users.
