Abstract(in English) | Geographic Information Science (GIS) is a scientific discipline resulting from a combination of Geography and Informatics. Its major purpose is quantitative and statistical analyses of various phenomena occurring on the earth surface. The abbreviation “GIS” has been widely used, and originally it stood for Geographic Information Systems. It was in the late 1990s when the “S” of GIS began to represent Science as well as Systems. To handle abundant and complex geospatial data, the development of systems including hardware and software was required in the early stages, but once the systems were established, more emphasis was placed upon using the systems for scientific purposes. As this history indicates, the methods and techniques of Informatics should be used for fast processing of abundant spatial data to enable their meaningful analyses. Indeed, geospatial data sets are inevitably large because they contain both locational/geometric data (XY coordinates) and attribute data (text and values). In recent years, geospatial data are often in high resolution and acquired at frequent intervals; therefore, they are regarded as typical “big data”. Consequently, researchers in Geography and Informatics should collaborate to conduct joint research such as the applications of artificial intelligence to spatial analysis. This kind of collaboration dates back not only to the invention of the first GISystems in the 1960s but also to the late 19th century when a punch card system was developed for handling U.S. census data. This early collaboration is one of the origins of modern Informatics, indicating that the fusion of Geography and Informatics was a historical necessity. This paper describes the outline of GISystems and GIScience including their historical development, and offers future perspectives on the fusion of Geography and Informatics. |
