Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Realizing energy-efficiency is a key to expanding the application area of wireless networks. In order to reduce energy consumed by wireless networks, we have proposed a radio-on-demand (ROD) network which offers wireless access only when and where it is needed in an on-demand manner. Each ROD node is equipped with a low-cost and low-power wake-up receiver, and only the wake-up receiver is turned on during its idle period. A node with communication demands first transmits a wake-up signal to the wake-up receiver of the target node which, after the successful reception of the wake-up signal including its wake-up ID, turns on the main system and data transceivers. In this talk, we first introduce ROD WLAN where the concept of ROD is applied to WLAN. Then, we describe ROD-SAN (Sensor and Actuator Network) in which ROD is applied to SAN that requires low-latency in addition to energy-efficiency. We present results obtained by field trials conducted by using our developed testbed of ROD-SAN. Finally, we discuss the benefit and challenges when ROD is applied to sensor networks with mobile sink where mobile agents are used to gather monitoring information over sensing fields.
