[Poster Presentation] Adaptive Initial Contention Window Control Scheme for Dense IEEE 802.11 Wireless LANs

Abstract(in English) Portable information devices with a wireless LAN interface, such as smartphones and tablet computers, have been spreading rapidly.Therefore, high density of stations instigate severe degradation of area throughput in wireless LANs.One factor is that an initial value of minimum contention windows size (CWmin) in existent Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) is small for the number of stations. Because smaller CWmin is not appropriate for high-density station, frame collisions attempt for sending of a frame and communication performance per a station decrease.In this paper, we assume that many stations are connected to a single access point (AP) and propose the media access control method for high-density station. In our proposed method, an AP measures channel utilization and the number of stations that are transmitting a frame to the AP at the time periodically.The AP switches a value of CWmin based on these parameters, and the AP informs value of new CWmin to stations using a beacon. We performed computer simulations in order to verify the performance of our scheme.The results show us that our proposed method outperforms the conventional CSMA/CA over wireless LAN in high-density station in terms of throughput.
