Power Saving Method of Wireless Stations based on Adaptive Control of Burst Transmission and NAV Duration

Abstract(in English) Recently, the usage of WLAN (Wireless LAN) by mobile devices, such as smart phones and tablet computers, is spreading. However, these mobile devices consume large amount of electricity when they communicate through WLAN, and their battery lifetime is shorten. In order to reduce the power consumption, IEEE 802.11 specifies PSM (Power Saving Mode). In PSM, the wireless stations can save the energy by switching their wireless interfaces to {it Sleep State} when they do not transmit or receive packets. However, PSM cannot let wireless interfaces sleep in an optimal way. Furthermore, packet transfer delay to wireless stations in PSM becomes increased. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new power-saving method based on adaptive control of burst transmission and NAV duration exploiting RTS/CTS handshake. In the proposed method, power consumption of wireless stations in idle state is reduced. An AP (Access Point) holds the {it transmission deadline} to all downlink packets which are buffered in its transmission queue. In addition, we cooperate the proposed method with PSM to further improve the performance of power saving.
