Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) It has recently been demonstrated that an association between sound sequence and visual motion is rapidly formed and, after forming this association, the sound sequence can be a driver for visual motion perception (SCVM: sound-contingent visual motion perception, Teramoto et al., 2010). The present study investigated the underlying neural mechanisms for this phenomenon using visually evoked potentials (VEPs). In an exposure session, two circles placed side by side were alternately presented in conjunction with tones of high and low frequency for 9 min. Before and after the exposure session, behavioral and VEP changes were measured in different sessions. While the magnitude of the SCVM was measured in the behavioral session, the VEPs to a visual stimulus which blinked twice at a fixed location with the tones were measured in the VEP session. The results revealed that the amplitude of N75 and P100 components to the 1st and 2nd blinks was changed between the pre- and post- exposure session only for the participant group who experienced the SCVM. This finding suggests the SCVM occurs at relatively early visual processing stages.
