Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Antennas for GPR(Ground Penetrating Radar) is placed close to the half-space boundary of air and soil (dielectric material). Electromagnetic wave radiation from the antenna is strongly influenced by the material around the antenna. Currently in Japan, the EM radiation is limited to the level of “Weak radio station condition” defined by the “Radio Law” of Japan. However, EM field strength from GPR under the measurement conditions defined by the “Radio Law” is very different from that in normal operation mode. In this report, we demonstrate that the most of the EM energy from the GPR antenna placed 1/10 wavelength from the ground surface is transmitted into the soil, but not to air, due to a wave trapped along the boundary, and these phenomena disappears if the antenna is located more than 1/3 wavelength above the ground surface. We propose here that the GPR electromagnetic wave field strength should be evaluated in the operational mode on the soil.
