Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Memory strategies used by good navigators for learning a route was investigated. Participants learned a route by studying a video of a car driving on a road. They then draw a map of the route that included landmarks they had memorized. This procedure was repeated twice. Good and poor navigators were classified based on the ability to draw the route without errors. Results indicated that good navigators recalled more landmarks than poor navigators. Moreover, of the total number of landmarks that were recalled, good navigators recalled more landmarks on corners of intersections at which the direction of travel changed. This result suggests that good navigators focus more on landmarks that are important for remembering the turning points. This finding indicates that good navigators not only have a superior memory, but also have a better mnemonic strategy for learning a route.
