Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) When strongly reflecting objects such as calcifications in soft tissue are scanned in Doppler mode, fluctuation of red and blue mixture behind the reflecting object appears. This phenomenon has been called “twinkling sign/artifact”. Although the twinkling artifact has a potential in clinical diagnosis, the occurrence mechanism of this phenomenon has not been clarified yet. To clarify the mechanism of twinkling artifact, an in-vitro experiment was conducted using a medical ultrasound diagnosis machine and a tissue-mimicking phantom including microcalcifications, and the effects of the oscillating disturbance on a microcalcification embedded in soft tissue were investigated. As a result, suppression of twinkling artifact by controlling oscillating environment demonstrated that the twinkling artifact is generated from variability among the acoustic signals, not phase jitter or surface roughness of microcalcificaiton.
