Joint Macro-to-Macro and Macro-to-Pico Inter-cell Interference Coordination in Heterogeneous Networks

Abstract(in English) We propose a joint macro-to-macro and macro-to-pico inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC) method for heterogeneous networks where low transmission-power pico base stations (BSs) overlay onto a high transmission-power macro BS. To avoid imparting severe interference from macro BS with high transmission power to users connected to a pico BS, we define the protected band, which is exclusively used by only pico BSs, within the overall system bandwidth. Furthermore, at the remaining frequency band, which is called non-protected band in the paper, we employ the soft fractional frequency reuse (SFR) so that the macro-to-macro ICIC is achieved. We also propose an adaptive control of the bandwidth allocation to protected band from a viewpoint of proportional fairness (PF), which is achieved with very limited information exchange between BSs. Computer simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method compared to conventional approaches under various system conditions.
