Dual free-layer spin-torque oscillator for read head application in magnetic recording

Abstract(in English) Read heads for HDDs with areal density over 2 Tb/in2 are predicted to suffer from magnetic noises that seriously reduce the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio. To overcome this problem, a novel read head composed of a spin-torque oscillator (STO) has recently been proposed. For the implementation of an STO read head, large-amplitude microwave emissions with narrow spectral linewidth are required. In this article, we experimentally study the oscillation properties of an STO with a dual free layer and its response to a pulsed magnetic field. This type of STO shows large-amplitude oscillations with narrow linewidth because of synchronized magnetization motions in the two free layers. In addition, this STO has a thinner structure than the conventional one. This feature is preferable for an STO read head, in which the STO needs to be placed inside a narrow shield-to-shield gap to obtain high spatial resolution.
