Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Physical activity has been associated with mental health. The present study investigated the relationship between intraday physical activity and mood disorders. Inpatients (N = 115) with major depression or bipolar disorder provided their 2-week activity log data as measured by accelerometers. Each 2-week data block was divided into 1-day-long sections. We performed a Fourier series expansion on the activity levels for each section and performed a PCA on the coefficients of the Fourier series expansion. The principal component scores (1st–5th) were entered into the logistic regression analysis as predictor variables. The discriminative ability of the model was expressed as an ROC area under the curve (AUC). The ROC AUC of the model was 0.75 for the discernment between major depression and bipolar disorder, suggesting that intraday changes in the level of physical activity can be used as discriminators between different types of mood disorders.
