Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Wireless local area networks (WLANs) based on IEEE802.11 usually use carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) for media access control. In CSMA/CA, when the number of wireless terminals connecting to an access point increases, a data frame collision often occurs among the wireless terminals, which results in a decrease in the total throughput. Therefore, to improve the total throughput, we have proposed a media access control protocol based on the synchronization phenomena of coupled oscillators (SP-MAC). In our previous studies, we confirmed that SP-MAC can drastically decrease the data frame collisions and improve the total throughput compared with that achieved with CSMA/CA, when all terminals send saturated traffic. Here, WLAN users often use real-time communications such as IP phone and video conference by the wide spread of mobile terminals. However, the performance of SP-MAC has not been sufficiently evaluated considering the real-time communications. Therefore, in this study, we discuss the applicability of SP-MAC for real-time communications. Especially, this paper evaluates the SP-MAC performance when assuming VoIP as the real-time communications.
