Extraction and Classification of Musical Symbols for Handwritten Music Score Recognition

Abstract(in English) Automatic recognition of handwritten music score in Optical Music Recognition (OMR) is a difficult task. There are many problems : variety of notation by writers, difference of distance between music symbols, failure of binarization, to be solved for OMR system. We propose extraction and classification techniques for music symbols aims at recognition of music symbols from offline handwritten music scores. We perform staff removal and extraction and recognition of music symbols with scanned offline handwritten music score. Our staff removal method is realized by staff line thickness and space estimated with mode of white and black vertical run-length. Recognition of music symbols step, we extract feature using chain code histogram from connected component in score without staff and classify each component into notes, rests and other music symbols using nearest neighbor. As result, error rate of 1.62% was obtained in staff removal and Recall of 96.07% and Precision of 92.45% were obtain in classification music symbols, in the evaluation experiment on the CVC-MUSCIMA database.
