Design of mode converter with function-expansion-based 3D topology optimization method

Abstract(in English) In this paper, a mode converter for polarization diversity circuits is designed by using three-dimentional topology optimization method with extended function expansion method. The converter considered here has following functions: TE0(Ex11) mode pass through and TM0(Ey11) mode is converted into TE1(Ex21) mode. In the function-expansion-based topology optimization reported so far, a topological design is restricted to planar structures . However, it is important for devices utilizing the mode hybridness to design full three dimensional structure with height variation. In this paper, the function expansion method is extended in order to be able to design multi-layer structure devices and the availability and validity of this approach are confirmed by a design of compact mode converter with 10 μm length.
