Abstract(in English) | The combination of fiber-optic and radio links in the millimeter-wave (MMW) band is very attractive for broadband access networks and mobile fronthaul/backhaul system owing to its resilience and flexibility. The use of wavelength-division multiplexing in optical domain is important to increase the number of transmitting signals over the system, which is important to support ultra-dense small-cell networks in urban areas. However, the direct transmission of radio signals in the MMW band over fiber limits the number of transmitting channels because of its low optical-spectral efficiency. The transmission of radio signals in the intermediate frequency bands over fiber systems helps increase significantly the spectral efficiency and thus the number of transmitting channels. It also helps reduce fiber dispersion effects. However, an independent electrical local oscillator (LO) is needed to up-convert the IF signals to the MMW band at the remote sites. In this paper, we present an IF over fiber system with a remote LO delivery for reducing the system complexity. At the transmitter, optical signals at two different wavelengths are modulated separately by IF signals and a LO signal. The signals are combined and transmitted over fiber links to remote sites. At the remote sites, the signals are separated and converted to the original IF and LO signals. The recovered LO signal is then inputted into a frequency multiplier to up-convert to a desired MMW carrier signal. Finally, the IF signals are mixed up with the LO signal and transmitted in to free space. For the proof-of-concept demonstration, we transmit a single-carrier component and interband carrier aggregation LTE-A transmission over the system and evaluate the performance. |
