[Invited Talk] Radio-On-Demand (ROD) Networks for Green Wireles Access

Abstract(in English) Wireless access networks and its devices have important roles in service systems of the Social ICT. In particular, early realization of power saving of the wireless networks and devices is strongly expected. In contrast to this, we have been developing the Radio On Demand Networks (ROD) that provides a wireless access for query of communication anytime and anywhere. In ROD, wireless devices change to a sleep mode autonomously when the amount of communication itself is reduced. Furthermore, the devices in ROD have the wake-up receiver with ultra-low power consumption, and switch to active mode to communicate in case that the wake-up receiver detects a wake-up signal. Thanks to the On Demand Access scheme, ROD is able to provide ultimate power efficiency to wireless access networks. We have been developing a method of the wake-up signal that extends a conventional radio wave used for data communication. In addition, we have successfully evaluated the proposed method by carrying out field trials of both wireless LAN and sensor actuator networks. In this paper, we introduce contributions of energy efficiency and network flexibility of the ROD to the Social ICT.
