Numerical investigation of radiation properties in terahertz-wave oscillators using Intrinsic Josephson junctions

Abstract(in English) To increase the radiation power of a terahertz-wave oscillator using intrinsic Josephson junctions, radiation patterns for different cavity modes in a rectangular mesa and bias voltage dependence of the radiation power were calculated.Magnetic current distributions indicating the 112, 111 and 121 modes were calculated at each bias voltage corresponding to the radiation frequencies of 0.332, 0.494 and 0.648 THz respectively. A unidirectional beam pattern which showed the maximum power density was obtained from the distribution for the 121 mode, whereas V-shape patterns were drawn for the 112 and 111 modes. Moreover, the bias voltage dependence of the radiation power obtained from these radiation patterns also showed the maximum power for the 112 mode.The dependence obtained from the calculation agrees to that of the radiation power observed from the fabricated mesa. From these results, the radiation pattern for the 121 mode is applicable for high power terahertz generation, which can be achieved by an array of the mesas.
