Stability and implementation of mixed rule cellular automata

Abstract(in English) This paper studies mixed-rule cellular automata (MCA) governed by two rules of simple Boolean functions. Depending on the rules, the MCA can generate various periodic orbits. As a typical examples, we consider a periodic orbit corresponding to a control signal of hexapod walking robots. In order to analyze stability of the periodic orbits, we introduce a simple feature quantity. In order to visualize dynamics of the MCA, we introduce the digital return map. We have discovered suitable rule pairs in which the MCA generates a strong stable peridic orbit. Such a periodic orbit is impossible in elementary cellular automata. Presenting a simple FPGA based hardware prototype, typical periodic orbits are confirmed experimently.
