Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Physical contact (PC) optical connectors realize long-term stability by maintaining contact with the optical fiber even when fiber withdrawal occurs due to temperature changes. With multi-core fiber (MCF) connectors, stable PC connection conditions need to be newly investigated because MCFs have cores other than at the center. In a previous study, we investigated the microscopic displacement of the connected ferrule endfaces using the finite element method (FEM). As a result, by using MCF connectors with an apex offset, the allowable fiber undercut where all the cores make contact is slightly smaller than that of single-mode fiber (SMF) connectors. Therefore, we proposed a new equation for determining the allowable fiber undercut of standard outer diameter MCF connectors. The results of the composite temperature/humidity cyclic test using uncoupled 4-core fiber connectors with fiber undercut close to the value obtained by the new equation have shown that PC connections can be maintained. In this study, to confirm that the value obtained by the new equation can be applied to coupled 12-core fibers, coupled 12-core fiber connectors with fiber undercut was fabricated, and the composite temperature/humidity cyclic test was conducted. |
