[Special Talk] An Analytical Design Method of Wideband Combiner for Handset Doherty Amplifier

Abstract(in English) The development of handset Doherty power amplifier (DPA) is currently focused on achieving high data rates and low power consumption. However, the commercial use of handset DPA is not yet popular due to its large size and narrow band. To address this issue, we have developed a combiner for the DPA. Outputs of differential carrier and peak amplifiers are converted to single-end and combined in the combiner which consist of a transformer. Our combiner configuration is original, and we have introduced original analysis methods to determine the design parameters. The analytical methods, including numerical optimization and approximated equation analysis, demonstrate wideband characteristics in circuit simulations. The DPA with a combiner designed using a numerical method is fabricated and tested. The DPA exhibits the highest efficiency over the target frequency band compared to recently reported handset DPA at the same band.
