Multiple-Parallel Interference Optical Modulators Based on Multi-Branched MMI Optical Couplers

Abstract(in English) Multiple-parallel interference optical modulators, where multiple phase-modulated lightwaves are directly interfered with each other, are investigated. We have designed a multi-branch optical coupler with adjustable optical split ratios based on a multi-mode interference (MMI) waveguide structure using Ti-diffused LiNbO3 waveguides and fabricated optical modulators with three-parallel and six-parallel interference structures. By adjusting intensity and phase of the carrier component of the modulated light spectrum, enlarging the modulation index and the precompensation of wavelength dispersion were experimentally confirmed using the three-parallel interference modulator. In addition, we designed a six-parallel interference optical modulator and demonstrated the operation of six-multiplication optical modulation.
