Estimating Total Traffic Volume with Joint Matrix Factorization

Abstract(in English) Knowing the actual traffic volume on each street across a city can benefit various fields, such as transportation and the environment. Although fixed detectors have traditionally been used to measure traffic volume, they are difficult to cover all roads because they are expensive to install and maintain. Recently, methods that estimate traffic volume on all roads by using connected vehicle data in addition to fixed detector data have gained attention. In this study, we propose a method that estimates traffic volume by considering the traffic volume conservation law and the fixed detector and connected vehicle data. We also evaluated the proposed method using traffic data from a real city, and found that it can estimate with higher accuracy than the baseline methods.
