Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A psychophysical study by Cai et al. (2023) reported that the perceptual scaling of different material-perception components, glossiness and translucency, were significantly correlated. In the present study, we investigated whether mechanisms for visual information processing of glossiness and translucency are common or not by a psychophysical experiment. We used skewness adaptation, which was previously used in a study on glossiness-perception mechanisms. Participants were instructed to report either glossiness or translucency of test stimuli using a match-to-sample procedure, after adapting to an image with either positive or negative skew in luminance histogram. The results showed a significant effect of adaptation for glossiness judgments. Glossiness scores showed significant reductions in a different degree between adaptation to images with positive and negative skewness, while translucency judgment showed almost no effects from the two adapters. This result suggests that the mechanisms for the perception of the two material components, glossiness and translucent, could be different.
