Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) High reliability is required for optical transmission systems, which are widely deployed as the network infrastructure for carrying large amounts of traffic. Recent studies have reported that the failure probability of optical transmission networks increases rapidly after the occurrence of Q-drop, a phenomenon in which the Q-factor temporarily plummets and recovers. If preventive maintenance measures can be taken based on the detection of Q-drops, the reliability of optical transmission systems could be improved. However, there are various possible causes of Q-drops, and it is assumed that some Q-drops may lead to future failures while others may not. In this study, Q-drops were classified based on the differences in the behavior of the optical physical characteristics at the receiver-side, and the relationship between each Q-drop and failure was evaluated. As a result, it was found that Q-drops caused by optical power failure are highly likely to lead to future failures. Furthermore, we propose a new method to identify the Q-drops caused by optical power failure using only the receiver-side quality data. Experiments have demonstrated that the proposed method can be used to identify the Q-drops caused by optical power failure in a wavelength division multiplexing transmitter-receiver system.
