A Proposal of Hue Preserving Contrast Enhancement Method Using Smoothed Histogram in Each RGB Component

Abstract(in English) Many color image enhancement methods have been proposed to improve the image quality of the captured image. However, by using these method, images can be over-emphasized and chroma adjustment can not be realized well. In this report, we propose a hue preserving contrast enhancement method that realizes adjustment of chroma. In the proposed method, the histogram of each RGB component of the original image is smoothed. Then, the histogram specification method is performed using the smoothed histograms of each RGB component to broaden the pixel distribution in the RGB color space. The values are approximated by a linear function satisfying Naik and Murthy's hue oreserving condition. Out-of-gamut values are corrected by processing in an equi-hue plane in RGB color space. In the experiments, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by qualitative and quantitative evaluations.
