Multiple Scattering Effect Analysis of Circularly Polarized Radar for Volcanic Lava Observation

抄録(和) Estimation of eruption size is important for mitigation of eruption hazards, and for this purpose, it is necessary to clarify the dominant factors of eruption style and its transition process from the viewpoint of chemical reaction, but there are still many unknowns, such as the correspondence with thermal history. To solve this problem, we are developing a microwave observation system suitable for in situ observation of volcanic products including lava in a high-temperature closed environment. When observing the volcanic crater, multiple scattering waves from other objects appear due to the influence of rock walls, etc., and these waves interfere with the acquisition of dielectric permittivity information of the object. In this study, we investigate the effect of multiple scattering by a simple cylindrical wall that simulates a crater or fumarole, and the scattering characteristics of circularly polarized waves in a lava layer by electromagnetic field analysis. The results show that in a smooth and uniform dielectric layer simulating a lava layer, the co-polarization component tends to have a scattering distribution with weak backscattering and large side lobes, regardless of the relative permittivity. Analysis of the polarization dependence of the received power of the scattered wave in a system in which a cylindrical wall surface is introduced shows that the cross-polarization received wave can reduce the effect of multiple scattering from the wall surface. This result is presumably due to the circular polarization dependence of the scattering intensity distribution of the smooth dielectric layer.
