Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The Body Mass Index (BMI) has been widely used to assess thinness and obesity in all age groups, including children and adolescents. However, in recent years, the limitations of BMI have been pointed out. This study discusses the mathematical conditions that BMI should satisfy from the viewpoint of general population statistics. We claim here that height-adjusted indices such as BMI should satisfy allometric uni-scaling, which means that all quantile curves in the weight-height distribution have the same scaling index. In contrast, when the scaling index varies with the position of the centile curve, it is called allometric multiscaling. We analyzed the height and weight database obtained from the Japanese School Health Statistics Survey and found significant multiple scaling characteristics in the 5-13 age group for males and the 5-11 age group for females. Those findings mean that BMI cannot be used to assess thinness or obesity at these ages adequately.
