Abstract(in English) Recently, the application of optical communication in space has been actively discussed. Compared to microwaves or millimeter waves, the higher carrier frequency of light enables high-capacity data transmission, and the fact that light itself is not subject to licensing or regulation increases the freedom of communication. Indeed, the application of optical communication in satellite-to-satellite and satellite-to-ground communication is currently being actively examined. Meanwhile, we have proposed a new free-space optical communication system for these satellite communications, using a photonic crystal surface-emitting laser (PCSEL). Unlike conventional semiconductor lasers, PCSELs oscillate over significantly large areas while maintaining single-mode lasing, enabling watt-class output power. In this invited paper, based on the latest experimental results, we discuss how these features of PCSELs can be applied to satellite communications.
