Acoustic Manipulation in Air Using Small Sound Sources

Abstract(in English) Small-scale acoustic manipulation was attempted to manipulate a small object in the air. Three small sound source units consisting of three ultrasonic transducers per unit were fabricated. The sound sources were placed at each apex of an equilateral triangle, and the sound axes were crossed at the center of the triangle to form a two-dimensional standing wave field by the interference of ultrasonic waves. A foamed polystyrene sphere of 2 mm in diameter was placed in the field, and the sphere was trapped at a node of sound pressure. The movement of the sphere was confirmed by changing the phase of the sound sources. It was recorded on video, and the stability and possible range of trapping were measured and discussed.
