Output characteristics of fuel cells using biomaterials

Abstract(in English) Thin films for separators were prepared using nanofiber dispersions of chitin or chitosan. These were used asseparators in a glucose/KOH fuel cell, and were compared with the power generation characteristics of a fuel cell using cellulose(dialysis membrane), i.e., electromotive force, maximum output, discharge charge, and energy density. As a result, it was foundthat chitosan showed almost the same output characteristics as cellulose, but chitin showed lower EMF and output. This was found to be due to the weak mechanical strength of the chitin film, which cracked in the electrolyte and allowed the fuel to penetrate the separator.
