Demonstration for Linear-Circular Polarization Converter Fabricated by 3D Printer in 300 GHz Band

Abstract(in English) In recently, the terahertz band (frequencies above 300 GHz), which is currently not in commercial use, is expected to be utilized in wireless communications. In order to realize terahertz-band wireless communications in mobile devices, compact terahertz transmitter/receiver devices are required. However, since the relative angles between transmitters and receivers are not constant, the reduction in polarization efficiency cannot be ignored. To solve this problem, we propose a linear-circular polarization converter (LCPC) in terahertz-band that can be fabricated using an optical 3D printer. The purpose of this study is to clarify the feasibility of the LCPC through theoretical analysis using an electromagnetic simulator and fabrication and measurement of the obtained shape. As a result, longitudinal elliptical polarization was observed by the electromagnetic field simulator. The actual measurement results showed oblique elliptical polarization with the major axis around 45°. The results show that the proposed device can convert linearly polarized waves into elliptically polarized waves, although the long axes are different.
