[Invited Talk] Nanographene Synthesis by Polymerization of Pentacene

Abstract(in English) Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with a width of 1.2 nm are a type of nanographene and are expected to be a next-generation semiconductor material. We have attempted to synthesize GNRs by polymerization of pentacene using Ni supported W-mesh, pentacene, H2 gas, and soft X-ray irradiation. Nanographene (pentacene polymers (N=2-5)) could be synthesized using a W mesh with 3 % Ni coverage (WNi(3%)). The WNi (3%) mesh allows the same amount of pentacene and dihydropentacene to be present on the mesh, which increases the degree of polymerization and the yield of nanographene. Furthermore, graphene was synthesized by soft X-ray irradiation in films containing pentacene polymers fabricated on Ni films, suggesting that hydrogen desorption and catalytic effects on the Ni film surface during soft X-ray irradiation promote Pn polymerization and that pentacene polymers act as nuclei for nanographene formation.
