Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This study examines the hierarchical depth-cue technique to achieve presenting virtual objects at freely-selected far depths of tens to hundreds meters in optical see-through mixed reality. This technique separates depth cues into three hierarchies, and gives the virtual objects them for each hierarchy. In the first hierarchy, the physiological information, e.g., vergence and binocular disparity, is given to indicate the virtual objects are not in near depths where it works as depth cue. In the second hierarchy, the pictorial information, e.g., the virtual objects’ sizes and luminance contrast, is given to indicate rough depths of the virtual objects. In the third hierarchy, information based on scene understanding is given to indicate accurate depths of the virtual objects. The experiment is conducted by using an optical see-through head-mounted display, and the experimental results reveal that the virtual objects’ luminance can be used to control the perceived depths of the virtual objects displayed by the technique. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of the technique.
