Improvement of Functional Printed Patterns for Electric Over Stress Protection and its Performance Evaluation

Abstract(in English) Electrical overstress protection is necessary for electric equipment to prevent malfunctions and failures caused by high voltage due to electrostatic discharge or lightning surge. Previous research proposed a functional printed pattern for the EOS protection. The pattern was diamond-shaped conductors placed between the lines on a printed circuit board. When the EOS is applied, the pattern makes to conduct between the lines by electrostatic discharge. Factors such as the pattern’s gap distance, position, and quantity have also been researched. In this study, we improve the shape of the pattern to lower the operating voltage and improve the stability of the pattern. As a result, the proposed pattern with reduced area achieved the operation voltage of 1.3 kV, 200 V lower than the previous pattern. In addition, the proposed pattern can operate more stable than the previous pattern. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the of insertion loss of the proposed pattern measured using a 50 Ω matched print circuit board was small, less than approximately 0.6 dB at frequencies from 100 kHz to 1 GHz.
