Abstract(in English) | The realization of high dynamic extinction ratio (ER) and optical modulation amplitude (OMA) while keeping the optical and RF signal losses low is a major issue in carrier-depletion Mach?Zehnder (MZ) silicon optical modulators. In this study, we raise an issue in terms of an optical resonance between multi-mode interferometers (MMIs) that compose an MZI. We show that, although having an effect on reducing the dynamic ER in the push-pull regime as demonstrated experimentally, the resonance can transcendentalize them beyond the realm of the modulation efficiency and generate OMA enhancement effect in the single-drive regime without involving any optical and RF signal losses. By comparing two modulator structures that generate a resonance internally, we successfully identify factors that are responsible for increasing the OMA enhancement effect. |
