Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We report the results of a study in which we investigated whether a grammatical illusion occurs in sentencescontaining Japanese humble expressions using time-constrained acceptability judgment task and self-paced reading task. According to the cue-based retrieval theory, when an attractor with a cue required by the head for its argument (target) ispresent, there is an erroneous association between the head and the attractor, interfering with the establishment of thedependency between the head and the target. In this context, prior research has reported an effect termed facilitatoryinterference effect, which indicates higher acceptability ratings for example sentences compared to control condition sentences, as well as decreased reading times in tasks paced by participants and in eye-tracking experiments. When Japanese nativespeakers performed time-constrained acceptability judgment task and self-paced reading task, the facilitatory interferenceeffect was observed in the former one. These results suggest the occurrence of a grammatical illusion even in sentencescontaining Japanese humble expressions.
