Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) English sentences containing universal quantifier and negation are ambiguous. Specifically, for the sentence “All of the glasses didn’t break,” the “None broke” reading and the “Not all broke” reading are available. The interpretations can be guided by the context, the Question under Discussion (QUD) with the preferred interpretation being the one that effectively addresses the relevant QUD. In foreign language learning environments, students are not typically provided explicit instruction regarding this type of ambiguity and disambiguating cues. In the current study, I investigated the sensitivity of Japanese-speaking L2 leaners of English to QUD. The survey revealed that they exhibit sensitivity.
