Abstract(in English) | Because Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite has characteristics of low latency and high coverage communication, integration of LEO and 5G communication is expected to offer high-speed communication in weak terrestrial network areas and disaster areas. For effective integration, it is necessary to grasp the communication quality differences. However, a detailed analysis of the communication quality characteristics of Starlink, which LEO represents, has yet to be fully discussed. Although we revealed that Starlink’s UDP throughput fluctuates periodically in our previous study, we still need to analyze and evaluate TCP throughputs, including CUBIC-TCP. We must investigate why Starlink’s TCP throughput significantly degraded compared to UDP. Therefore, in this paper, we newly evaluate TCP throughput, RTT, TCP packet-level traces, and TCP congestion window parameters to analyze TCP congestion behaviors. From the analysis, the results confirm that Starlink’s TCP throughput fluctuates periodically due to Starlink’s communication control mechanism as well as UDP. In addition, congestion windows are decreased not only because of the packet losses of wireless transmission links but also the packet losses of Starlink’s periodic available bandwidth fluctuation. For quantitative evaluations, we show degradation of TCP throughput due to the unnecessary congestion window reduction and demonstrate the expected improvement of TCP throughput when TCP does not decrease the congestion window even if Starlink drops the packets. |
