Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Since basic calculations are the foundation for learning mathematics, careless mistakes such as sign errors should be corrected early. We have proposed a method to reduce calculation errors by highlighting specific parts of a mathematical expression during calculation. In order to investigate the effect of highlighting methods in calculations, we conducted experiments using five types of highlighting methods to find the wrong part of a formula that has already been computed. The results of the experiment suggested that the method of coloring in brackets is superior in the calculation of positive and negative numbers, and that combining multiple highlighting methods and presenting them simultaneously may cause confusion in the calculation of character expressions. However, since the experiment was conducted with a mixture of methods, the effects of these methods could not be fully verified. Therefore, in this study, we conducted an experiment using two types of highlighting methods on university students in the humanities, whose exposure to mathematics is decreasing due to curricular reasons, while fixing the method for each collaborator. The results showed that there was no difference between the two highlighting methods, suggesting the possibility that the correct-response rate may be reduced by relying on highlighting to determine correctness.
