Initial Study on TSOA-AOA Localization using Secondary Surveillance Radar and Cooperative Receiver

Abstract(in English) Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) is widely used for obtaining the position of flying aircraft in air traffic control. With mechanical scanning of a large antenna, SSR estimates the distance to the aircraft by interrogation and reception and the bearing angle by angle of arrival (AOA). On the other hand, another system called Wide Area Multilateration (WAM) estimates the aircraft positions with multiple receivers based on the principle of Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA). Because SSR and WAM use the same signal format called Mode S, cooperative localization with SSR and WAM can be considered. This cooperative localization is expected to enable downsizing SSR or reducing the number of receiver while maintaining the required performance. To achieve this, a localization algorithm is proposed in this technical report, where a Taylor-series method using TSOA (Time Sum of Arrival) and AOA was modified for enroute surveillance. The evaluation of the proposed method by numerical simulation is also presented.
