Fabrication and characterization of surface plasmon sensor using non-propagating mode in metal diffraction grating

Abstract(in English) Aiming at the realization of a surface plasmon sensor using stationary propagating surface plasmons (hereafter referred to as non-propagating modes) that exist when light is perpendicularly incident on a surface plasmon sensor made of a metal diffraction grating, we analyzed the behavior of surface plasmon resonance in non-propagating modes by the RCWA (rigorous wave coupling analysis) method, fabricated a surface plasmon sensor by electron beam lithography, and evaluated its optical characteristics. From simulations and experiments, we succeeded in detecting a liquid medium with a refractive index of 1.70 in a non-propagating mode. In addition, the simulation revealed that the non-propagating mode is generated by Fano resonance, in which the localized surface plasmon generated at the edge of the metal and the propagating surface plasmon propagating through the metal diffraction grating resonate at normal incidence.
