Basic Study for Assist and Automation of PAPI Inspection by Drone using Machine Learning

Abstract(in English) PAPI (Precision Approach Path Indicator) is a lighting system composed of four lights and installed beside a runway to inform an appropriate decent angle to pilots. Recently, applications of drones to check the PAPI's performance is studied thought conventional flight inspections of PAPI are conducted by using pilot's visual observation. The inspections of PAPI by the drones are supposed to be conducted by the flight inspector through the video monitor of the drone. However, assistances or automatic inspections are required to reduce the inspector's workload. In this study, the method to check the performances of PAPI lights are suggested by the machine learning and image processing. The result of the basic study is reported in this paper.
