Possibility of Weakly Coupled 4-core MCF with Small Cladding

Abstract(in English) Weakly coupled optical fibers with 4-core and 125-μm cladding have been in standardization efforts. At the same time, development of fibers that can achieve 10 times higher transmission density than the conventionally used single-core fiber (SCF) with 125-μm cladding and 250-μm coating is being conducted. Coupled MCF and few-mode MCF are being considered, but they present many challenges in terms of manufacturing, splicing, and cost. In this study, we propose the possibility of a small cladding 4c-MCF, which is a conventional weakly coupled 4c-MCF but can achieve approximately 10 times the transmission density.
