Abstract(in English) | Understanding the merging mechanism of metal nanoparticles is of fundamental importance for printing-based device production technologies. This study investigates the origin of the unique self-sintering phenomena of silver nanoparticles encapsulated by a combination of alkylamines and a small amount of oleic acid. We found that the self-sintering ability at ambient conditions is considerably enhanced by increasing the concentration of alkylamines in silver nanocolloids, although the alkylamines have been considered to only act as a stabilizer of nanoparticles. Based on the observation of the self-sintering process, we suggest that this process is promoted by the phase separation of silver nanoparticles and fluidized alkylamines after the volatile solvents are dried out. The dried surfaces of phase-separated structures exhibited a continuous network, being a characteristic of viscoelastic phase separation. This sintered structure should be advantageous for the production of highly conductive printed electrodes. The proposed mechanism will contribute to the further development of silver nanocolloids suitable for printed electronics technology. |
